From Yonge's Preface to Talks about the Laws we live under (preface dated 1881)

In our dread of being accused of influencing on behalf of one party or the other, we are, as it appears to me, leaving our population utterly uninstructed in their duties as citizens, and then we blame them for their misuse of rights they have never been taught to value at their true worth. I have endeavoured as far as possible to avoid all tokens of political bias, that no fear of inculcating party views may interfere with the use of the book.
